It is said that in England death is pressing, in Canada inevitable and in California optional. Small wonder. Americans’ life expectancy has nearly doubled over the past century. Failing hips can be replaced, clinical depression controlled, cataracts(白內(nèi)障)removed in a 30-minute surgical procedure. Such advances offer the aging population a quality of life that was unimaginable when I entered medicine 50 years ago. But not even a great health-care system can cure death—and our failure to confront that reality now threatens this greatness of ours.(2012年)
60. The text intends to express the idea that ________.
[A] medicine will further prolong people’s lives
[B] life beyond a certain limit is not worth living
[C] death should be accepted as a fact of life
[D] excessive demands increase the cost of health care
But not even a great health-care system can cure death—and our failure to confront that reality now threatens this greatness of ours.破折號后面的that reality可以用來指代前面的not even a great health-care system can cure death“再杰出的醫(yī)護體系也無法治愈死亡”這個事實,長難句中指代的處理技巧體現(xiàn)無疑。 此處,命題人主要是從英語閱讀中的“同義替換”的角度出發(fā),命制了干擾選項,而C選項的death should be accepted as a fact of life“死亡應(yīng)該作為普遍存在的事實被接受”,與原文的表達(dá)異曲同工。
Consumers say they’re not in despair because, despite the dreadful headlines, their own fortunes still feel pretty good. Home prices are holding steady in most regions. In Manhattan, “there’s a new gold rush happening in the $4 million to $10 million range, predominantly fed by Wall Street bonuses,” says broker Barbara Corcoran. In San Francisco, prices are still rising even as frenzied overbidding quiets. “Instead of 20 to 30 offers, now maybe you only get two or three,” says john Deadly, a Bay Area real-estate broker. And most folks still feel pretty comfortable about their ability to find and keep a job.(2004年text3)
53. When mentioning “the $4 million to $10 million range”(Lines 3-4, Paragraph 3) the author is talking about ________.
[A] gold market [B] real estate
[C] stock exchange [D] venture investment
